Megan, I think the article is aimed at the fact that Bill Gates has attained a great deal (not just with MS) and as such he can be considered successful. ($$ for one)

Everyone knows that a certain very successful hamburger chain makes very average hamburgers but they are still very successful, same thing.

Wayne, I think you need to update your article. Those 3 points may have BEEN the keys to Bill Gates’ previous success, but his organization now is floundering and his successor, Mr. Ballmer should update those Key Success Factors. I would add: (1) Listen to your customers (something MS feigns to do, but doesn’t ever seem to act on it or realize good products with that info); (2) Build it simple & Keep it simple (Have you looked at the clunky user interface to the Hotmail application and also the new Windows Live Messenger app? Do you think Microsoft Project is a user-friendly, simple tool?); and, (3) Be a catalyst in creating collaborative communities (here MS has had some success with developers, thanks to Robert Scobel and a few others; but now, their defensive mode against this way of working (Open Source Code, Google/Wikipedia, etc.) is just going to be their demise.

Microsoft has lost its vision and innovation; It is racing to follow and catch up with Yahoo and Google; just look at the new Windows Live Messenger UI, it’s a dead ringer for Yahoo Messenger, but still with the clunky extras and not with value-adding functionality.

And, re: “Take immediate and massive action”, I have six words: “VISTA: It’s five years too late.”

Wayne, you make GREAT points. There are people who are open, generous, and abundant – then there are people who are worried someone will take what they have and never pay for more.
